NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) establishes minimum safety standards such as type and placement of fire extinguishers. IBC (International Building Code) provides requirements for building design and construction and includes requirements for proper placement.
Annual maintenance needs to be performed by a certified person and ensures:
- Extinguisher is located in its designated place, accessible, and is visible.
- Signage is installed where required.
- Operating instructions are present.
- Pressure gauge is in operable range.
- Extinguisher is full.
- Pull pin operates properly.
- Hose or means of expelling is not obstructed.
- Tamper seals/indicators are present.
- Extinguisher is not damaged.
