Emergency lighting serves a critical role during emergencies. Safe passage is crucial when time is of essence. A properly installed and maintained lighting system may assist building occupants to reach safety when smoke or darkness make this difficult. It may also assist first responders during emergencies.

NFPA 101 Emergency Lighting Inspection & Testing Frequency
Periodic testing must be conducted in accordance with local codes and standards and repairs made when needed to provide adequate lighting when needed.
Lighting must have a back-up power system that supplies power to ensure people can safely exit in the event of a power outage or other emergency.
- Functional testing shall be conducted within 30-day intervals for a minimum of 30 seconds.
- Functional testing shall be performed annually for not less than 90 minutes for back-up powered units.
- Sell testing/ self-diagnostic equipment must be visually checked in 30-day intervals.
- Written records shall be kept for AHJ review
- Needed repairs must be performed when deficiencies are found.
NFPA, (National Fire Protection Association), Life Safety Code establishes minimum safety standards such as type and placement of lights for buildings.
IBC (International Building Code) provides requirements for emergency light building design and construction and includes requirements for proper evacuation lighting.
